Park hosts pensioners' play area
A playground designed specifically for pensioners has opened in a park in north Manchester. The Older People's Play Area on the Dam Head Estate in Blackley, is kitted out with equipment to strengthen hips, tone legs and train the upper body. It was set up by the local residents' association, who were inspired by a similar playground in Germany. The park, which cost £15,000 to build, was tested by locals aged over 70 before it opened to the public. It was paid for by Northwards Housing, which said it was "delighted" to support the scheme. It can be found next to the under-fives play area, and has six pieces of equipment designed to give older people a gentle workout.
This sounds a great idea - how much fun for grandparents to go and play in a playground at the same time as their grand children! Go here for the rest of the article.

Clarkson loses money after releasing bank details in the media
Monday, January 07, 2008
All you'll be able to do with them is put money into my account. Not take it out. Honestly, I've never known such a palaver about nothing
The bank cannot find out who did this because of the Data Protection Act and they cannot stop it from happening again. I was wrong and I have been punished for my mistake ... Contrary to what I said at the time, we must go after the idiots who lost the discs and stick cocktail sticks in their eyes until they beg for mercy.

Message in a bottle solved
When it was found, Mr Coltart said that after the bottle had travelled 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean for a year, he wanted to return it to its owner. "But when I heard the mystery had been solved, I was shocked - I just wasn't prepared for it," he told BBC News. Mr Coltart and staff at North Cornwall District Council thought Alexus came from Durham in the north-east of England. "I suppose you could put it down to a small - or local - attitude, but we assumed it was our Durham. Obviously we were completely wrong."
Alexus told the ranger it had been a spur-of-the-moment decision to send the message in the bottle. "She was sitting on a boardwalk in Atlantic City with her mother, who'd just finished reading the book Message in a Bottle and she decided to give it a go," Mr Coltart said. He said Alexus had also appeared shell-shocked during their transatlantic phone call. "I think it's probably just too big for a 13-year-old to comprehend, but all in all, I'd say we're quite happy with the ending."
The council now plans to return the bottle to North Carolina, with some Cornish goodies, including some fudge and a book showing the local area.
Baby Jesus 'saved' by GPS
Friday, December 28, 2007
Well elsewhere in Florida in Wellington they also implanted a small GPS tracking device on their $400 statue which, sure enough, was subsequently stolen late Wednesday. The tracking device was activated, and Jesus was found in a house a short distance from the community center. Police subsequently arrested Danielle Santino, 18, of Lake Worth, Fla. and charged her with grand theft. She was still in jail late Thursday. "I stole Jesus," she told police, according to the newspaper.
Christmas cards from heaven
Thursday, December 27, 2007
In a message on the cards, Mr Fitch said God had allowed him back to Earth specially to deliver the cards. But his barber told local media they had planned the ruse together. Patty Dean, 57, was quoted by the Ashland Daily Tidings newspaper as saying Mr Fitch had approached her with the idea in 1987, saying he wanted to play one last trick on people after his death. She said he told her a week before his death that she would probably be able to send the cards this year.
The card showed Mr Fitch square-dancing with his wife Jessie, who herself died in 1995. "I asked Big Guy if I could sneak back and send some cards, at first he said no; but at my insistence he finally said, 'Oh well, what the heaven, go ahead but don't [tarry] there.' ... Better get back as Big Guy said he stretched a point to let me in the first time, so I had better not press my luck," he ended the message. "I'll probably be seeing you (some sooner than you think). Wishing you a very Merry Christmas."
Santa crucified to protest commercialism
Monday, December 24, 2007
BREMERTON, Wash. - Art Conrad has an issue with the commercialism of Christmas, and his protest has gone way beyond just shunning the malls or turning off his television. The Bremerton resident nailed Santa Claus to a 15-foot crucifix in front of his house."Santa has been perverted from who he started out to be," Conrad said. "Now he's the person being used by corporations to get us to buy more stuff."A photo of the crucified Santa adorns his Christmas cards, with the message "Santa died for your MasterCard."The display is also Conrad's way of poking fun at political correctness. He believes people don't express their feelings because they're afraid of what other people might think. His neighbors found the will to express their feelings this past week. Some were offended but many were just curious.Jake Tally walked by on Friday and chuckled, but didn't pretend to understand the
message."I don't really know what to think. I know it's about God, but Santa has nothing to do with it," he told the Kitsap Sun newspaper.
A thin Santa?
Monday, December 17, 2007
A health-conscious Santa is refusing to wear a pillow under his suit as he believes it promotes child obesity. Bill Winton, 80, said children traditionally viewed Father Christmas as a chubby role model and grow up thinking it is fine to be overweight. The former pipe coater said he was spurred into action after noticing children sitting on his knee had become heavier over the years. The 12-stone Santa is at Westside Plaza Shopping Centre in Edinburgh.
Speaking to BBC Scotland news website, Mr Winton, from Wester Hailes, said he maintains a healthy diet and does not drink cola. He said: "It makes me wonder why parents allow their children to get into that state and makes me slightly annoyed about it. The parents and kids have been asking why I'm so thin and I say 'Santa's been on a diet' and everyone is in agreement that it is a good idea. I have always eaten healthily and have run a healthy eating course in the past. I gave up cola years ago when I saw what it did to a penny. I hope other Santas across
the country follow suit so that parents start taking responsibility for their children's diets."
Police chief breaks into police headquarters
The chairman of his police authority said security had increased as a result - but he would not advise anyone else to repeat Mr Brunstrom's actions. It is not known whether Mr Brunstrom was wearing any safety equipment as he climbed the scaffolding. It also remains unclear how many of the building's four storeys he scaled.
It is far from the first time Mr Brunstrom has been in the headlines. He is outspoken against speeding motorists, wants drugs to be legalised, and has allowed himself to be "shot" with a Taser stun gun as the force expanded the use of the weapons to rural areas.

Parent sells child's Christmas present as punishment
Sunday, December 09, 2007
A 15 year old kid was smoking pot [cannabis] in his backyard and his dad caught him. So dad has decided to sell his son's Christmas present (Guitar Hero III) on eBay. Check out the auction here.
Every teenager is wanting this game for Christmas this year. It is almost impossible to find. You know this kid has to be upset that his poor decisions are going to cost him the game he wanted so much.I don't know how effective this is going to be, but I like the Dad's creative, swift action.
The next time ...
Wednesday, November 28, 2007
The next time you feel like God can never use you, just remember... Noah was a drunk, Abraham was too old, Isaac was a daydreamer, Jacob was a liar, Leah was ugly, Joseph was abused, Moses had a stuttering problem, Gideon was afraid, Samson had long hair and was a womaniser, Rahab was a prostitute, Jeremiah and Timothy were too young, David had an affair and was a murderer, Elijah was suicidal, Isaiah preached naked, Jonah ran from God, Naomi was a widow, Job went bankrupt, Peter denied Christ, The Disciples fell asleep while praying, Martha worried about everything, The Samaritan woman was divorced, more than once, Zaccheus was too small, Paul was too religious, Timothy had an ulcer, AND Lazarus was dead! no more excuses now."

Oil painting found in the rubbish sells for over $1 million
Saturday, November 24, 2007
A painting stolen 20 years ago then found lying in a pile of rubbish on a New York City street has sold at auction for just over $1m (£484,000). The 1970 painting Tres Personajes (Three People) by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo was taken from a warehouse where the owners had placed it while moving. It was found by Elizabeth Gibson as she took her morning walk four years ago on Manhattan's Upper West Side. After discovering the painting's value, she returned it to its original owner.
Elizabeth Gibson said she was drawn to the painting when she spotted it on the street. "I know nothing of modern art but it didn't seem right for any piece of art to be discarded like that," she said.
It hung on a wall in her home for several months before a friend suggested it might be valuable. An internet search revealed that the missing painting had been the subject of an appeal for information on the Antiques Roadshow TV programme.
Hedgehog goes on Atkins diet
Thursday, November 15, 2007
A hedgehog that weighs nearly four times as much as its fellow spiny mammals has been put on a diet. Staff from the Wildlife Aid Centre in Leatherhead, who discovered the 2.2kg (4.8lbs) animal in a volunteer's garden, initially thought he was ill. But after closer inspection George was found to be simply overweight.
"We've got to reduce his weight and we've got to do it slowly. Cat food is high in protein and we're stopping him eating bread. So it's a bit like the Atkins diet" according to Ms Cowen. Staff at the Wildlife Aid centre said the average adult hedgehog should weigh between 600 and 700g (1.3 and 1.5lbs).
Curvy women are more intelligent
Tuesday, November 13, 2007
Women with curvy figures are likely to be brighter than waif-like counterparts and may well produce more intelligent offspring, a US study suggests. Researchers studied 16,000 women and girls and found the more voluptuous performed better on cognitive tests - as did their children.
